Our May 12th Anniversary somehow got pushed to the side in preparations for Kelly and Bryan's Wedding. We decided to go out the following friday, the week after the wedding to the same location of Kelly and Bryan's reception. It was a beautiful evening. We live in such a nice place. We had fun walking around the coast and enjoyed seeing a bunch of dolphins at sunset with birds diving in the ocean to catch dinner.

Nathan has become my little buddy on Tuesday's and Thursday's. Rebecca now has Volleyball practices after school now and since Kelly and Bryan's Wedding is up and coming too......Grandma Karrie has offered to tend Nathan, Monday-Friday. Tuesday was weird without him and so was today. I will need to make some visits over to Grandma Karrie's home and invite him over very soon. I may come and visit this weekend Amber and Kevin!!!

We went to review the reception place. Becca and Scott as we were leaving the Point Vicente Interpretive Center in RPV. It is a beautiful location.

How lucky am I? I got to spend the afternoon last Thursday, with my Grandson Nathan and my Mom and Dad. Here is Nathan in my parents garage, looking so happy. We had some special time together. Nathan kept Grandpa busy....Great-Grandpa gave Nathan his choice of Hostess Chocolate donuts, spice gumdrops and Three Muskateer Mint ice-cream bars. Nathan didn't refuse any of it. This was at the end of our Earlene Carter Christmas party with all of Scott's siblings. I noticed 3 of our daughter's sitting on the couch. Then I realize, all our children were there. Rebecca and I got to go to see "A Christmas Carol" today at he El Capitan theater in Hollywood. There was a little pre-show with singing and dancing. It really was fun. They passed out jingle bells and we even got to help with some of the songs. We took Grandma Carter and had a fun time with her. We even did a little Christmas shopping after the show and had lunch at California Pizza Kitchen. Rebecca really wanted to go down to Sprinkles Cupcakes on the way home, which we did. We each got a Eggnog cupcake. They are soooo good. That place is dangerous. Too good!

Monday went down to the strand and went on a wonderful bike ride with friends that are turning 50 years old this year. Kathryn and Janene turn 50 this December. Cheryl has about 4 years till she turns 50. So this was our special girls day out bike ride. It was so pretty and we got to have a great lunch together at 22nd street in Hermosa at Martha's.

Here we are with our bikes near us. I think next time we get together we're going on kayaks in Long Beach.

Grandma Karrie and Grandpa Jim are in Hawaii this week. Nathan gets to spend his days with me and nap times too. He really is such a good boy. Today he told me he wanted to go in his crib. It was only 1:30 p.m. He usually doesn't go down till 2:00 p.m. I gladly put him down and he slept till 4:00 p.m. It was a good day at Grandma Shelly's. He went with me to LAX too, to pick up Aunt Sandi. She was happy to see her little Nathy.

Today was a great day down in Redondo Beach, Knob Hill. This is where I play each week and the ladies I play with. This photo was taken in May 2009. One of my friends from High School (Nancy Hammond McNeil) was visiting from OR and came and played a few games with us. She and I played in High School together. TUACAHN Amphitheatre "AIDA"

This is where we saw the musical "AIDA". All the music is written by Elton John and Tim Rice. I loved it. It is a love story set in a perfect setting for the outdoor amphitheatre with the Red Rock back round. If you ever get a chance to see it there, do it.

Rebeccas roommate Sylvia, from EFY randomly was there the same night. They found out they were both heading to St. George as we were driving up and Becca texed her. This was not planned. It was pretty cool since they have been trying to get together and she is from Draper, UT. The next day they got to hang out at the mall and have lunch together. We got to meet her sisters and family who were down visiting friends.

We met up for lunch at Cafe Rio and took it to the park by the Old Tabernacle. We didn't know the town Bees would bee there. It really was a battle trying to eat our wonderful salads. Scott tried to distract them with this Root Beer that they seemed to really enjoy.

Mom and Dad came by today, it was a surprise visit. Ryan I were just getting ready to take the TL in for some repairs. Then this cute couple showed up on our door step. Had to snap a photo, even Zorro made the shot.

Nathan by this time of the day had already played in the hose with Ryan. It was hot again today. We spent the day at the open air market in Redondo Beach. Played in the Ocean, got vegetables, flowers, lunch, popcorn and played at the park. We were both tired after the kite flying. Nathan had a wonderful nap today, and so did Grandma Shelly.

Nathan kept chasing this long blue tail. He broke it off a couple of times. He told Ryan he was sorry. It was pretty cute. Here they are fixing the tail of the kite. It really flew up there high.

I was all excited to have Nathan back after having the summer off. I was supposed to watch him on Thursday, but Kevin was sick and so Kevin just stayed home and watched him and worked from home. So I just had Nathan on Friday this week. Grandma Shelly has Nathan on Tuesday's and Thursday's and Grandma Karrie has Nathan on Monday, Wednesday's and Friday's. It is amazing how much he has changed in the past 3 months. We went out front to play a little basketball. We had just put in a new basketball net and I wanted to show Nathan. I shot a few baskets, after making the shot Nathan said "Yeah Grandma Shelly" and clapped and raised up his hands. It was soooo cute. I've never had any one cheer for me like that. As I shot a few more and made them, Nathan did the same thing. It was pretty loud and I thought the neighbors were going to come out and see what was going on. It is pretty special to have some one cheer you on like that.

We made the World's Best Cookie recipe. They have coconut, oatmeal and pecans in them. Yum! I made 60 plus cookies. They are all gone today. I gave 3 plates away. The family ate the rest.

There are 3 shades of green. I picked one of them. The family all wanted to stick with blue. It's hard to change sometimes. The house is pretty much all done. The front door is still in the works, needs to be measured and ordered. It will be a shiny black. Tomorrow I will take a photo of the house all painted except the front door. Hope you like it Kelly. We are all pretty happy with the way it turned out. Change is good!

What a wonderful day it was to see Tommy Oslund Baptized last Saturday. His older brother Marc is just out serving a mission for about 3 weeks and his 14 year old brother is baptized. Marc is a convert of the church of just 2 years. We were thrilled to share this event with his wonderful family. (pictured above)

We made Rachel's favorite meal for all the family last friday, she goes back up to school this friday the 4th of Sept. She has a favorite dish. It's chicken baked slow with bacon wrapped around it with beef seasonings too! Lipton baked potato pieces. Rebecca made her a special crown that I will have to get a better picture of her wearing. We are going to miss Rachel. She has been home since April and has been working hard at Dolci Mango a european yogurt place. She returns to BYU-I, for another year of school. She will be on her second year of college.

CTR Sugar Cookies and Volleyball

I made these special CTR cookies for our Primary children last weekend. They really were excited. I told them they needed to be reverent or my family would be happy to eat the extra cookies. We generally don't do snack in Primary. We did tie in the cookies to the CTR theme, which stands for "Choose the Right". I think it may help them remember to do that each day or at least for a few moments.

Ryan and Jeff played a CVBA tournament last saturday in Manhattan Beach. It was a hard tournament. The pool they were in was amazing VB, the best I've watched this summer. The 1st team they played won the whole thing. What a hot humid day it was, we were sweating just watching.

California Adventures with Nathan and Amber 8/10/09

Rebecca talked me into going to Disneyland again. The most I've ever gone in one years time. We really had a great day. We meet Amber and Nathan for the morning and had fun seeing a new show in the Bugs Life Theatre. I highly recommend it. It was called "Its not easy being a Bug". The show was in 3D and lasted about 9 mins. There are a few fun surprises! It was a bit intense for Nathan, but he braved though it OK.

Nathan wasn't too sure about that bad guy Hopper behind him. He finally gave him a high five.

La Jolla Shores Beach-Saturday 8/8/09

Best Sandwich shop we found to eat lunch! Don't get the lemonade though. They have tables right out in front you can eat at. You can then watch all the Kayakers coming and going down to the beach to go into the 7 caves of La Jolla. We got to do that. What fun. We had two double kayaks. Rachel and Becca went together and Scott and I did as well. We went out with a guide and actually got to go into a few caves. Lots of sea life was seen as well. We saw a 5 foot Leopard shark while paddling out! Lots of fish and noisy Sea Lions. It was a lesson in working together. Some of us did better than others. Scott thinks this is a good thing for anyone thinking of marriage to do before getting married. You can see how well you work together!

This beach was packed. Not what we like, but it was so nice there and the water was like bath water. In the back round you can see the 7 caves of La Jolla shores.

Such a great Hotel....I really want to stay here some day. It really is old and charming. If you have ever seen the movie "Some Where In Time" with Christopher Reeves. This place reminds me of that movie a lot.

Summer Vacation Time

Rebecca, Rachel, Scott and I went down to San Diego and had a great time at Sea World, Coronado and La Jolla Beaches. The weather was awesome and we really enjoyed the shows. It had been a long time since we'd gone to Sea World.

This was a fun show called Cirque La Mer. Lots of amazing stuff done by these two.

The dolphins were so cute and could circle that tanks so fast.

Kelly and Bryan (Kelly's boyfriend) came to visit this weekend from Provo. It was so fun to have them. They planned a fun trip to Disneyland and it worked out that Amber, Kevin, Nathan, Becca, Sandi, Matt were able to meet up all together. I spent the day relaxing with nobody home. They all had a fun time except for one "Tower of Terror" ride for someone? No name mentioned here.

Kelly and Bryan also got to see "Fiddler on the Roof" saturday night. They both really enjoyed it.

Today Bryan and the girls spent some of the day warming in the sun and playing with water balloons with Nathan and the hose too! It was a pretty warm day, so all had fun getting a bit wet. Amber and Kevin had their 7th Wedding Anniversary and got to get away to Vegas this weekend. Thank you Grandma Karrie for watching Nathan for the Martin's. We loved having Nathan for today!

Scott surprised me with tickets to see "Fiddler on the Roof". It was at the Pantages in Hollywood. We went out to eat first and saw some interesting people and then the show. It started at 8:oopm and went just before 11:oopm. What a great performance. The best part was having the guy Topol in it. He is the guy that is in the orginal movie/play. He was great at 73 years of age. He still has it. Great deep voice and timing for all the comedy in the show.

Here I am right when we got down there. It was a big day. Went and watched Ryan and Landen play in Santa Monica in a VB tournament. Mom and Dad came to watch too. They did great, always wanting to do better.

Today I got to have lunch with Mom, Dad and Rebecca. My 50th Birthday isn't until Saturday and they wanted to keep that day free soooooo.....we went to the Elephant Bar. Good food, they had never been there before.

Hermosa Beach to Santa Monica

LuJean and I rode from her home to Santa Monica/3rd Street Promanade. It was a great day for bike riding. It started out foggy over the coast the whole way there. What a great ride it was. We went over bridges, saw the boats at Marina Del Ray, sail boat classes going on and kayaks being paddled around. It was quite a nice ride with lots of changing scenes. I recommend it to anyone that likes bike riding and a beautiful ocean view. It took about 2 hours and 15 mins. each way. It was a days event. I will tell you I have a few sore spots from sitting on the bike for almost 5 hours today. I hope to recover soon.

Summer Happenings

Grandpa & Grandma Hansen came to watch Rebecca play in one of her high school VB Tournaments at South High. She is playing setter/opposite. She is doing a great job and hopefully will make the JV team at West High School. She has been busy practicing everyday early morning hours.

Rebecca, Nathan and I at Lunch-a-bunch. We celebrated my 50th Birthday with some of the ladies in the ward. We had a nice group there. Nathan looks so grow up to me lately. The food was pretty good at Pei Wei. The owner gave me a gift certificate to come back and eat there. That was really nice and a great little surprise.

Amber made this special frozen toy treat for Nathan to play with at our "Pooh" party as he called it. It had a bunch of little plastic toys in it, which once the block of ice melted, he could play with them. He had fun throwing it in the water. Luckily he missed Becca and Sandi's heads when he threw it in the pool. It was a hard block of ice. The day turned out perfect for a "HOT" pool party at Amber's Home. We didn't think we would end up going in cause the water was cold. It got so hot we all had to go in. We were all happy to cool off in the pool.

I think this picture says it all. It was so nice to have Amber and Nathan come down today. Becca joined me with VB play. It was a good thing. We had a total of 4 playing today. Becca and I won Heather and Alisha. These are some girls with VB skills. Great job Becca. This is after Becca had VB practice that same morning from 6am to 8am. She was a great sport to go with me to VB today. It was worth it, cause Amber and Nathan came down and relaxed with us after our games.

Sandi found a place near the LA Temple that has amazing Macarons. We've been there twice now in the past two weeks. The kind you find in Paris.

This is the cute box a dozen comes in. You can get any amount. One only needed. Check out the website for more info. www.paulettemacarons.com I found out you can order online and they will be ready when you come to pick them up.

Here are a few of my favorite flavors. From left to right. Lemon, Coconut, Sweet Almond.

Sandi likes the Vanilla and Carmel. You really can't go wrong here. The center is cold and the outside cookie is warmer and made out of meringue. The Lemon is strong. It taste like your eating a slice of Lemon Meringue Pie to me.

We had the family over Friday night for dinner. After dinner Amber was telling us how much Nathan likes to make forts. The girls were helping Nathan make a fort out of a blanket when Amber remembered how Grandma Earlene had made a little house fort out of felt. Oh yeah, I went up to our Attic and pulled it out. It works well with a card table under it. Nathan had fun making Chocolate Chip Cookies for us in his new little house. He can really make them up fast. He hand delivered them to each and all of the family.

It was a beautiful day in Manhattan. Ryan played with a new partner Mark and they did well.

Grandpa & Grandma Hansen watched 4 games. They won the 1st three and lost one. Then they went to the finals and lost in a single elimination game 26-28. Next time will be better. Ryan got some amazing hits and blocks. He's getting better.

After a long day playing two man Volleyball. They came in 3rd place and got their "A" rating. Last week at Mission Beach it was 5th place. They are getting better. This week another tournament in Manhattan Beach. It is a harder tournament. "AA" rating.

Is that Woody? Yes it is....he came to wish Nathan a Happy 2nd Birthday. Nathan seemed to like Papa dressed as Woody. We had a nice group at the Woods home for Nathan's Party. Thanks, Karrie, Jim and Taylor for you kind hospitality.

This was the 1st part of our day at La Romeria Park with the Redondo 2nd Ward Annual Picnic. Lots of good food and friends and fun things to do. VB, Horseshoes, Water Balloons, chatting, Egg toss and just relaxing. Lots of our Carter family were there too. Ron and Shelly Carter, Ashley, Byron and Lila, Sandi and Matt and Kelsey and her friend Jarod. We had Kristy and Rachel too. Such a nice time all together.

After the temple, we went to Century City Outdoor Mall to exchange some earrings I had received for Mother's Day. They have some really neat stores there. They also have a AMC, containter store, and great food places. I told Scott we could do everything there to finish off our anniversary day. He told me he wanted to go home and change clothes. I agreed. We left the mall and headed home to change. We planned to change clothes and then go and see "Star Trek" the new movie out, that I have heard good reviews.

Sandi called to wish us Happy Anniversary as we were driving home on the freeway. I told her we were heading home.

Little did I know the kids and Scott had planned a little 30th Wedding Anniversary Party for us. Just the family. When we pulled up in front of the house, I saw Amber and Ryan with Nathan up on Ryan's shoulders. I was happy to see Amber, Nathan and Ryan. It is always fun to have the family over. We went inside to see signs the kids had made and Yellow streamers everywhere. That was one of our wedding colors. Everyone yelled Surprise. I was totally surprised! They had a lovely dinner planned. They also made a DVD with all these photos of Scott and I and the family through the years. It was really neat. We all sat and watched that. It had really great music to it also. "We've Only Just Begun" which was sung at our reception by my cousin, Rebecca . So many good memories. Thanks so much. Amber, Kevin, Nathan, Sandi, Matt, Ryan, Rachel and Rebecca. We missed you Kelly. We will see you soon.

Glad I got to use my 2fer pass before the 30 days ran out. Rebecca has a year pass which was fun for her along with Kevin and Amber. We got to meet them there again! Nathan you have good parents to take you to Disneyland so much. I love this photo of Nathan Wall-e and Amber.

Rachel received this special little bunt cake as a gift from a friend, and also a gift card to "In and Out" along with some balloons. What a fun gift to receive! She also got her favorite birthday cake from Coldstones with cake batter ice cream, yum.

Here is Chelsea, Rachel and Becca. They just got back from Benihana's. They enjoyed a great eating adventure. Rachel and Chelsea went shopping and then Rachel showed her the pretty coast line where we live. Happy 19th Birthday Rachel. We all love you very much!!!

LA Zoo

We took a surprise trip to the Zoo today. Amber and Kevin invited us. It was warm, but we had some cool breezes. Nathan was in and out of his stroller. He could see all the different animals better out of his stroller.

We all loved this Meerkat! He posed a bunch on a rock. We think he loves doing that all day long.

Here's Reggy the alligator. We think he's alive. I believe he was just sun bathing here. Amber's 1st grade classes comes to the LA Zoo each year. She told us she reads a book about this alligator, "Reggie the Alligator".

Here's some of the gang. Missing Ryan, Kevin and myself. I forgot to charge my batteries so my camera died and I only got a few shots. Luckily Ryan and Amber had their cameras, hope to see Amber's photos on her blog soon. It was a great day and we all enjoyed seeing God's animal creations. Loved seeing the hippo, which was BIG! Also the giraffes and monkey's.

We were really excited because after Kelly's Graduations, we were invited to go to Glen and Valerie Payne's daughter's reception on Saturday. It was held on University Ave. Beautiful building- the old Library in Provo. We haven't seen these good friends for almost 10 or more years. They have 5 kids all about the same ages of our children. Scott and Glen lived together with 10 other guys while attending BYU over 30 years ago. Glen and Val will celebrate their 30th Wedding Anniversary 2 weeks after our 30th Anniversary on May 12th. I think we look good for 30 plus years passing by. We hope to see them in May and go out to dinner with them. Glen had a serious accident a year ago, and so we were excited to see he was doing so well.

Graduation Day #2 April 24, Friday 2009

Kelly had another smaller group ceremony for her department in which she graduated from. She majored in English and minored in French. It was really cool to hear her name read. This was also in the big Marriott Center. Again the speakers were good and we were happy to be there too with her. She did have others there clapping when they called her name. Thanks friends of Kelly's for clapping for her. We were told to wait until the end and clapped for Kelly then. Because of that I only gave one small clap for Kelly when they called her name. Sort of silly I know. Kelly, it was great being with you this past weekend!!!

Graduation Day #1 April 23, Thursday 2009

Shelly and Kelly after the wonderful graduation. I think we both look pretty happy about the event that just took place. Elder Russell M. Nelson and Dieter F. Uchtdorf spoke at Thursday's large Graduation. I took notes...Elder Uchtdorf said to do 3 things: 1. Use Time Wisely 2. Continue to Learn 3. Always Seek the Spirit. I thought this was worth repeating, and good for all of us. They both were awesome speakers. Over 6,000 Graduates in the school. Below are two of Kelly's friends-Tara and Madison. They all met freshman year and lived close to each other in Helaman Halls. It truly is amazing how fast time has gone by. We are very proud of Kelly's accomplishments.

Windy Day Wed. April 15th

Ryan drove home from Provo on Tuesday and came in Wednesday morning. I was happy to have him come down to the beach and play VB with my friends. We played 4 games. It was really cold and windy. We warmed up once we started playing. Each game I played with Ryan, I won. We played 3 on 3. Too fun. Happy to have Ryan and Rachel home for the summer. Kelly will be staying up in Provo till the end of August. She Graduates from BYU this Thursday. Excited for her!!! Congrats Kelly!!!

Rebecca got a year pass for Disneyland this birthday. Because of that I got to take her and enjoy the day with her at the happiest place on earth. It was really fun just the two of us. A little easier deciding which rides to go on. We went on a lot of rides, buy didn't do everything we wanted before our legs gave out. We were there for 11 hours. We got to meet Nathan, Amber and Kevin there for a couple of hours and go on Nathan's favorite ride Dumbo. Rebecca really wanted to meet some of the Princesses and so we did. Here are just a few below with Alladin included.

Kansas City, MO- Here We Come!

We have been gone for a time, Scott, Becca and I had a really fun trip to Kansas City, MO where the VB Nationals were. We went a couple days early and were able to see some church history sites, only 10 miles away, Liberty Jail, Independence, MO. Adam-Ondi-Ahman about 50 mins. away. We also got to see a real Steamboat Buried Treasure Called the Arbia Steamboat. It is a must see if you ever go to Kansas City, MO. We also found a little treasure called Baby Cakes.....wonderful cupcakes, we visited that shop twice. Lots of good times and food.

Also I have been trying to get caught up around the home....Becca's 15th Birthday-Disneyland, Easter, Matt's Birthday, Ryan and Rachel moving back in for the summer, need I say more. All good and fun things, not complaining here.

This is us at a Famous place to eat in Kansas City, MO. It was called Gates Bar-B-Q. The food was good. Not to healthy though. This is the whole UVU Men's Volleyball team coaches and some of the family members that came to cheer the boys on. They did really well in the Tournament. They tied for 9th place out of 48 teams. Really 100 teams. Only 48 teams are allowed to come and play in the tournament. Ryan did great blocking and hitting. The team and we were a bit disappointed because the team that won the whole tournament-Fresno State, we had creamed in Vegas 3 weeks ago at that tournament. The finals were sure a fun game to watch. Talk about hitting the ball hard. Ryan is the one blocking both those shots shown here. He is wearing Green and black, # 18.

Nathan and Amber came by today on a beautiful spring day during spring break. This picture says it all. Special time together. Nathan had fun running around in our little backyard park. He played a little VB with Becca, shot a few hoops and kicked the soccer ball around a bit too. Just was so great to enjoy the spring air and sunshine.

Run Zorro Run

I love this photo of Nathan running after Zorro. Zorro knows he needs to keep moving or something might happen to him. Nathan's feet sometimes like to kick Zorro. Zorro loves to come around Nathan when he has food. Nathan does share too. So they have a love/hate relationship. You should hear Nathan say "Zorro" he says it so lovingly.

Nathan, Becca and I have all had little colds. No fun. We are hoping to feel better soon. We had a great day even though we were not feeling totally great. We hung out in the back yard. Nathan helped me plant some California poppy's, can't wait for them to come up. They are one of the happy flowers.

Nathan loves this fort/slide and can go up and down all by himself now and really feels happy about that! Can you see the simple joy on his face. I love listening to him and the happy sounds he makes. We weeded the shaded side of our house. A very small area. I asked Nathan to help me. He was gleeful and laughing while he was doing the pulling of grass/weeds(not by the roots). Such wonderful joy in children. I love to see the joy they have.

Fun Weekend in Vegas

We got to watch Ryan and his team UVU play in a pretty big tournament this past weekend. The did really well. They came in 5th place out of 40 or more teams. This will help them in their seating for the Nationals in a couple of weeks in Kansas City, MO.
